Many Americans dont know the true difference between "antique" and "vintage" home accessories and decor. Whether its furniture, wall art or a random knick-knack, not all home accessories can be classified as an "antique," even if it at an antique store, nor is everything vintage, or even retro, for that matter. Heres the low down on the differences between "antique," "vintage," "retro," or "collectible" home decor. Any item that is a minimum of 100 years of age is considered an "antique." This applies to furniture, clothing, home accessories, paintings, old farm equipment-you name it. If it at least 100 (but no, you great great aunt does not count,) then it an antique.
Before hanging any art on a wall, try different combinations of arrangements. Use painters tape and brown paper bags and keep rearranging the bits of paper on the wall until you have come up with a great picture arrangement. Always hang prints at eye level and use your hand in between pictures as a guide to space large and medium sized pictures. Mirrors are great to help create the illusion of space. By cleverly placing mirrors on an adjacent wall to a picture or something which is interesting in your room, will reflect the image and add a sense of space. For darker rooms, hang a decorative mirror near a window. The light will then bounce off the mirror into the room portraying more natural much-needed light back into the area.
Horses are featured in artwork from around the world, although most people tend to view them as solely additions to a Western-themed room with cowboys and Indians. Nothing could be further from the truth, and they are an attractive addition to almost any room with the right colors and textures. Whether you go all out and feature a life-size horse bust with matching horsehair furniture and accents or choose something subtle to finish the look of your room, horsing around is a great way to add something unique to your home.
